My perimeter spell woke me from a sound sleep. Someone, multiple someoneâs, had come over the walls. I got up and pulled on my pants, boots and belted on my sword and knife. I felt Em's mind with me. I stepped to the front door and opened it. As I did, a crossbow bolt cut a crease along my cheek.
I dodged back quickly. "Idiot," I admonished myself. I cast merge, and soft shoe and went outside to find my uninvited guest. I located them easily enough by their body heat. I reached into my stone bag, that was always on my belt, and took out a stone. I no longer needed my sling to throw the stones, since my magic did a much better job. I tossed a stone into the air and my magic launched it faster than the eye could follow. The first visitor to go down was the one whoâd creased my cheek.
I moved to a tree beside the stable and waited. As each one showed himself, I'd launch a stone crushing his skull. I let the next intruder go into the door of the house, then hit him from behind throwing him further into the house. The next one fell for the same trick. The final two held their position, so I had to go to them. The first lifted his head at an inopportune time, and died for it.
The last I wanted to take alive, to find out who sent them and why. He must have sensed my approach, because just as I reached him, he turned and fired his bolt. My dragon speed allowed me to dodge it. In my rushed state, I put too much power behind my punch and killed him. In my frustration, I kicked his dead body for making me kill him before I got the information I wanted.
I woke the men in the main house, and sent one for the magistrate, and city watch. The men gathered the six bodies and lay them in front of the stables. I tossed a light ball up so we could see who they were.
They were all dressed in plain dark clothes and all had a plain, hidden dagger, and were armed with crossbows. I checked their arms for guild tattoos which none had. When I opened their shirts to bare their chest, all were branded with the dark one's snake symbol. Well,
that answers that question, I thought.
I felt Em's mental nod.
The city watch and magistrate arrived and looked at the dead, and started asking questions of everyone. None of the men in the house had heard anything. I also made sure the magistrate saw the snake branding.
"Had trouble with them before?" the magistrate asked me.
"Five or six years ago, during the war. The only thing since was when I healed Lady Lark, someone had given her a dark poultice."
"I heard about Lady Lark's poultice. Though why do you think theyâd come after you, Sir Mage."
I shrugged. "I healed her, perhaps I interrupted their plans? I don't know.
